What is a Webhosting Service?

A webhosting service provides the user with space on a web server for the purpose of posting web pages to the internet. In most cases a monthly fee is charged by the webhosting service provider.
However, some companies do offer free webhosting service. We do not recommend free webhosting as an option for anyone who intends to start a business related website, or any type of website or blog where they hope to attract large numbers of visitors.
In addition free webhosting services will often place random advertisements and banner ads on the user's website, which can result in an unprofessional appearance.
The webhosting service maintains a bank of computers that are commonly called servers. The webhosting service will rent space on those servers to the end user (or webmaster) who in turn can upload their own webpages, graphics, files, and other materials to compose a website in whatever way they wish - within terms and rules of the webhosting service provider, of course.
As the user/webmaster uploads files to the web server, she or he can then make them available public viewing and use on the Internet through their own domain name.
To sign up for webhosting service, the user must first register a domain name - which will act as an "online street address" for the content of the website. Many webhosting service providers offer a package that allows the user to register a domain name and sign up for webhosting service at the same time.
We do not recommend that option. Most professional webmasters agree that it is safer to register a domain name with a certified domains registrar, and then seek webhosting service from a totally separate company. That reduces the risk for the user of having their website content and domain name both seized at the same time for some minor terms of service infraction or false spam claim.
